*STOLEN*

I just saw this on the "we love art and design" sight. Someone stole Jason Lee's one of a kind 8x10 polaroid of Dennis Hopper from This Gallery in LA. Lee put up a $25,000 reward, and whom ever the A-Hole is that lifted the picture, can return it anonymously, and they will not be charged. Get the word out, and if you have any info, contact the gallery 323-747-5301 or email to this@thislosangles.com

Sunday night TV...

Sometimes as a family, your wife and daughter might dictate what you watch on Sunday night TV. The Grammy's were on last night at our house, and I became more and more puzzled, as we were lead through a sea of BS. It's always interesting (stressful) to me, to see what is popular, with music today. From Lady GaGa's ridiculous style, to Lady Antebellum winning big for their easy-listening poppy songs, labeled under the guise of country music. There was a bright spot however for me, Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers and Bob Dylan played, and for a brief moment I felt that there was hope for the music world. It was nice to see some traditional players. I know it wasn't Justin Beeber, but for me it was a bright spot.

Oh yeah...

Ringgy and Melotic...

The band that made one of the biggest marks on my young life, although there were many others, The Smiths were huge. The biggest reason for me, was the rhythm guitar of Johnny Marr! As a young kid, I knew that his playing was something special, I would isolate the guitar, as I listened to the songs. After the band broke up, I didn't really care too much for the Morrissey solo stuff, and continued to play my Smith's records. The funny thing is that now, Johnny Marr plays with bands that my daughter likes, like Modest Mouse and the Cribs, where his guitar style is still easily heard. On my drive home last night from LA, I listened to the Smiths for the entire drive on the i-pod, and thanks to my friend Roger downloading 88 additional Smiths songs to my i-pod recently, I relived my youth. Songs that I have on record, but haven't put the needle on for many years. The music that the Smiths made in the 1980's still holds up, and very strong. It was a great drive home...

LA Velodrome...

Today we were down in Carson, Ca. at the Home Depot Center. There they have the only wooden Velodrome in North America. When I was in Europe a few years ago, I saw these Velodrome's in quite a few small towns, but in America, there are very few, and at that, most are cement. The Velodrome's are used today for bicycle's, but motorcycles are used to set the pace and create a draft. Years ago, these were the board track's that are so famous in motorcycle history. The craftsmanship that it took to build this track is incredible, all strips of bent hardwood, I was very impressed. This track was built for the 1984 LA Olympics, and has been in use ever since...

Erwin Ross "Der Rubens von der Reeperbahn"

Erwin Ross (1926-2010) first worked as a Sign Painter in East Germany, where he painted portraits of Lenin and Marx. His other works were deemed "obscene" by the government, and he was allowed (or asked) to leave to West Germany. There his career took a turn, he began to get jobs designing and painting Strip Joints. By the mid 1970's his work could be seen on every strip club in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg.

Oakland 1940's

Zombie Village, Oakland Ca. circa 1940's This would have been a great place to go... A totally different world, and certainly a different Oakland. What a difference 70 years makes. I used to work on 53rd and San Pablo and it was gnarly. Drive-by's, hookers, and drug deals in the late 1980's and early 1990's. You defiantly had to keep your eyes open, it was a sketchy neighborhood for sure. I think that the area has become better since, with Pixar right around the corner, and some company's moving into this part of Oakland, the area has undergone a small rebirth.

One of these days...

I have wanted to build a small travel trailer off of the old kit plans for some time...
