Unknown color SF Earthquake photos discovered...

The Flood Building showing damage...Shot from the roof of the Majestic Hotel...City Hall...Rooftop shot showing the damage along Van Ness Ave... The first ever color photos of the aftermath of the 1906 S.F. Earthquake have been discovered this week by the Smithsonian Institution. The pictures were shot by photographic pioneer Fredrick Ives, just after the quake. The pictures were donated to the Smithsonian by the artists son. These photos are great, and offer a much clearer view of what it must have been like. Note the very fancy hand lettered billboard in the bottom photo.

Hero...

Advertising from it's golden age...

I have always loved the old VW advertising promo shots. The way that people utilized their delivery vehicles back in the 1940's-50's-60's can't be beat. Today if a company has a "shop truck" they might letter the doors, but back in the day, they would paint the entire vehicle. Each company wanted to showcase their individuality. I love the look of the old designs, and would love to find someone to do a job like this for.
Moreover, the buses in these pictures are just great! Early to mid 50's panels & combi's... But take a closer look. Some of these buses have custom roof caps, rag top's, deluxe trim and pop out vendor sides. Absolutely out of this world...
The colors, the style, the design, just can't be beat...

So. Cal camping destinations...

These postcards from the 1940's Southern California campgrounds are so cool. I'm sure that all of these places are gone by now, or they are rented out by the hour. Come to think of it, I have never even thought about camping or horeback riding in Compton...

Billboard painters...

Billboard painting used to be a common job for the sign writer. My old mentors started out lettering billboards. In this day and age of modern prints, it seems absurd. Great history, and would be fun to take one on today, although nobody would pay. Today we call them murals, and people pay for that...

Deluxe...

Now this one is perplexing. Great photo of a early 50's deluxe barndoor. I have had this picture for a while, and talked about it today with my buddy Roger. The front accessory bumper over rider is very cool, but unlike anything that I have seen before. It looks like a American car over rider, but is obviously made for the bus. Anyone know??? Sorry Roger, I couldn't find your email...

This Friday Night...

This Friday night, my buddies the Royal Jokers, are having the first Oakland Cruse Night of the year. I can't make it this weekend, but I will get too one soon. If your up north, go...

National Parks Tour Buses...

One cool thing that the government is doing, is taking the old national parks tour buses, restoring them and putting them back to work. A couple of years back, I saw one in Zion National Park, and then last summer I saw two that were being restored at the Grand Canyon. Most of these buses have been converted to run Bio-Diesel, and have modern conveniences like air conditioning. These buses are so much cooler than a modern version, and add to the experience of the National Parks.
