SLO Bike Happening.....

Went out last night to the SLO Bike Happening, I had been invited by a friend after he saw my 1937 Hawthorn Zep in my shop. Being my first time, I had no idea what to expect. We rode down to the San luis Obispo Mission at 9 PM, by 9:15 the number of bicycles had grown to way over 500. It was very cool. We took off with the group, riding down the street. At the second corner, we waited for the light, the entire city block was full of bikes. The light turned green and everyone started to move. As we went through the intersection, the light turned yellow. There was a group of Cops that entered the street with flashlights, pulling certain people out of the ride. They came at me, but I went around. They did however nab my buddy. He received a reportedly $390 moving violation ticket. We were told that this is not a city sanctioned event, and that it was quite dangerous, and that there have been many problems in the past. Just after I took this crappy picture with my I phone the cop turned to me and said that he should also write me, as I had also ran the light (did I mention that the light was yellow)? Yet another good time wrecked by dick cops. Well times are tough, I guess the city's also need the revenue.... After handing my buddy the ticket, the one cop said, "wow those are really cool bikes".... yeh glad you like them!

Ol' timey Cowboy style .....

Just finished these two old west style restaurant signs. Man, I had a good time on these (even though the lettering and drop shadow seemed to take forever). It's always good to be given the reins and let loose. As for the "Beef Palace", the best old school heart attack on a plate, side of gravy, cowboy breakfast joint ever.

1948 Panhead

The Quicksilver Panhead show bike (1960's), I wonder how well those pipes worked? Very nice stance though. The Indian front end looks great.

1975 Stroker BMX

Kevin Wright's 1975 "Stroker" BMX restoration. This is the bike that I lettered the Ashtabula cranks, gooseneck and forks for. This bike was one of the first BMX styled bikes manufactured. Before this we were a running Sting-Ray's with "box handlebars" and pads. This restoration is pretty spot on, with exception of the tires. Very cool. I now have to letter the "Stroker" on the frame, and she will be done... Great job Kevin.

Chicken Ramp Jam 87'

Here is the original hand painted assitate used to make the silkscreen for the "Chicken Jam 87" T-shirts. Held at the now famous Chicken ramp in Livermore (East Bay) Ca. I plan on re-making some shirts from this old design soon....

Jay Ward's Shovel for sale...

My buddy Jay is selling his trusty ol' Shovelhead. Years ago we would rip around SF on our bikes, my 67' is sadly long gone, but Jay has kept his bike until now. This bike has been totally gone through, everything is fresh and works well. A very nice, reliable classic cruiser. $8,500 should move quick. This year, rather than using his traditional, "use the chain link fence" to hold himself up, while watching the drag races. Ben Shell sat in the bleachers with the rest of the spectators. Perhaps, we are all getting older?

Hot Rod Reunion....

To say that this years H.R. Reunion was packed is an under statement! There were so many people. Not to mention, historical race cars and historical racers. At times it was hard to navigate. But this worked out, because as you would try to snake your way around a blockage, you would find a hidden pack of front engine dragsters, or Gasser's. Everywhere you looked, something else would catch your eye. So many cars are coming out of the woodwork. These "as found" cars are so artistic, painted in the 60's or early 70's, they are a true study in the medium of the day. There are so many ideas to be taken and applied today. This is a true "Art Show". I could have filled the entire blog up with pics from this event, but here are just a few. Enjoy...

Central Coast Triumph...

Stoked, I striped and lettered this bike about a year ago. I didn't get a picture of the finished product. Now I have that pic, thanks to the Pushin' blog. The bike has a powder coated frame, tank and fender. I painted the scallop and stripes, also lettered the top of the tank (a verse from a Door's song). Good to see the bike together. The owners name is Ken, and he is a Harley Davidson dealer mechanic. But he races (flat track) and rides Triumph's.

C.S. Smith Sporting Goods....

The Paso Robles Pioneer Museum.

C.S. Smith rode a big wheel bicycle from S.F. to Paso around 1900 and opened his sporting goods store. The store was in business until the early 1960's. At the time the store was closed, the inventory was put into storage. Until a few years ago, when it was donated to the museum. A vast collection of guns, both NOS and used, boxes of NOS bicycle parts as well as other sports supplies. The collection of mounts that hung in the store. An incredible amount of stock. It blows me away, that this stuff still happens. I would (as would everyone else) love to stumble across a storage space filled to the top with perfect NOS 1940's-50's products. Keep dreamin'....
